Standards for unique object identification are essential for building the Internet of Things (IoT). The German Association of the Automobile Industry (VDA)/ AutoID Project Group has developed a set of cross-company guidelines that includes the Tracking & Tracing of vehicles, parts and returnable transport items (RTI). The guidelines are based on latest ISO/IEC standards and are suitable for industry-wide application within the automotive industry - this includes RFID AND optical methods such as Barcode/DataMatrix for object identification:

• VDA 5510 - Series Production Parts
• VDA 5520 - Vehicles

• ISO/IEC 19987 - EPC Information Services (EPCIS)
  

The EPCIS standard has been developed by the AutoID-Labs and GS1 and was adopted by ISO/IEC. The latest updates are avaiable at http://www.gs1.org/epcis.
